Unveiling the Inaugural Terence Riley Curators Summit: A Global Gathering of Architectural Minds (2025)

Unveil the future of architectural curation at the inaugural Terence Riley Curators Summit, a groundbreaking event set to take place on November 21, 2025, at Columbia University's Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation. This summit is a tribute to the visionary Terence Riley, a pioneer in architectural curation who graduated from Columbia GSAPP in 1984 and directed the Arthur Ross Architecture Gallery. But here's where it gets controversial... Riley's legacy is not just about preserving the past; it's about pushing the boundaries of what architecture can be. The summit aims to explore the diverse and complex world of architectural curation, where exhibiting, collecting, and programming are not just about buildings, but about the processes, prototypes, and archives that shape our built environment. The summit will bring together a diverse group of curators, each bringing their unique perspective on how to create new publics, build collections, curate processes, foster inclusive representation, and position the built environment within larger curatorial frameworks. The summit will include a closed-door session in the morning, followed by a public program held at GSAPP's Wood Auditorium from 1:00 PM to 6:00 PM. The afternoon event, open to the public, will feature presentations by participants on their curatorial work, and discussions addressing how to create new publics across disciplines, what it means to build a collection NOW, how to curate processes, how to create the conditions for inclusive representation and collective debate, and how to position the built environment within larger curatorial armatures. The summit is organized and chaired by Bart-Jan Polman, Director of Exhibitions and Public Programs Curator of the Arthur Ross Architecture Gallery at Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, with Jean Im, Assistant Director of Exhibitions and Public Programs. The summit is generously supported by Elise Jaffe and Jeffrey Brown, and was an idea developed by the late Jeffrey Brown alongside Dean Andrés Jaque. To attend an event at GSAPP, please register here (https://www.eventbrite.com/e/coalition-3-coalition-of-curators-tickets-1652927423419) at least two business days in advance. The afternoon program will be livestreamed through GSAPP’s digital channels.
