Western Alliance Bank and Zions Bank reported problems with bad or fraudulent loans, triggering a widespread sell-off in shares. The UK's stock market felt the impact, with major banks like Barclays and Standard Chartered experiencing share price drops of over 5%. The FTSE 100 index initially fell about 1.5% before partially recovering. European markets also declined, with Germany's Dax and France's Cac 40 affected. "The US banking sector's regional banks have raised concerns," said Russ Mould, investment director at AJ Bell. "Investors are questioning why multiple issues have arisen recently, potentially indicating poor risk management." Asian markets followed suit, with Japan's Nikkei index down 1.4% and Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index falling 2.5%. However, some US banks began to recover on Friday, with Zions Bank and Western Alliance Bancorp shares up about 2%. Kevin Hassett, director of the White House National Economic Council, attributed the issues to "messes" left by the Biden administration, while emphasizing US banks' resilience. "The banking sector currently has ample reserves," he said. Recent failures, including car loan company Tricolor and car parts maker First Brands, have raised questions about private credit market deals. JPMorgan Chase's Jamie Dimon warned these failures might signal more to come, saying, "When you see one cockroach, there are probably more." Concerns about AI investment potentially creating a US stock market bubble have also contributed to market unease.
