Are whispers of political surrender clouding the horizon? Kalonzo Musyoka, the leader of the Wiper Party, has vehemently denied claims that his party is ceding all Nairobi elective seats to the Democracy of Citizens Party (DCP). He's calling these rumors what they are: attempts to sow discord.
Speaking out on Monday, Kalonzo suggested that these narratives are strategically crafted to create a rift within the burgeoning political alliances, especially with the looming 2027 elections. He emphasized that collaboration doesn't mean giving up ground. Wiper, he stated, will continue to negotiate with integrity and respect. He urged supporters to ignore these destabilizing rumors, warning that such attempts are likely to intensify as the election season approaches.
But here's where it gets controversial...
On Sunday, DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua, speaking at a Thanksgiving service, outlined his party's ambitious goals in a coalition with Wiper. Their plan? To dominate Nairobi's political landscape in 2027. They aim to secure the governorship, the senate, at least 16 out of 17 parliamentary seats, and a whopping 75 out of 85 ward seats.
Gachagua revealed an agreement with Kalonzo, highlighting a shift from Wiper's previous support for ODM in Nairobi. The strategy is clear: DCP will take the Governor, Woman Representative, and Senator positions, while working with Wiper to capture the majority of parliamentary seats. They also plan to challenge the current dominance of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) in Nairobi politics.
Currently, ODM and its Azimio coalition partners hold significant sway in Nairobi. UDA Governor Johnson Sakaja is in office, while Edwin Sifuna and Esther Passaris hold the Senate and Woman Representative positions, respectively, under ODM.
And this is the part most people miss...
Recent by-elections underscore the ongoing competition between these parties. UDA secured the Baringo Senate seat and the Banisa, Mbeere North, and Malava constituencies. Meanwhile, ODM held onto its seats in Ugunja, Kasipul, and Magarini.
What do you think? Is this a strategic partnership, or a power grab? Do you believe the rumors, or do you trust Kalonzo's denial? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
