The section that investigates public corruption has been severely gutted, and the bureau's premier public corruption unit has been disbanded.
The department has also opened investigations into some of Trump's most vocal critics and dropped prosecutions of his allies. These developments have sparked concerns that the DOJ is being used to shield Trump and his allies from accountability.
Democrats on the committee argued that the department has become a 'shield for the president and his political allies when they engage in misconduct.' They pointed to the recent indictment of former FBI Director James Comey as an example of the department's politicization.
Comey faces one count of making false statements and one count of obstruction of justice stemming from congressional testimony in 2020. The indictment – and the circumstances surrounding it – have raised concerns about the department's independence and impartiality.
But here's where it gets controversial: Trump openly directed Bondi to go after his perceived enemies, including Comey, New York Attorney General Letitia James, and California Democratic Sen. Adam Schiff. When asked about this directive, Bondi confirmed that she was indeed the one Trump was referring to.
