Carlos Eric Lopez's Dia de Muertos Gala: A Celebration of Latino Culture and Community
The Los Angeles River Center and Gardens, a public park renowned for its Mission Revival architecture and lush gardens, was transformed into a vibrant celebration of Dia de Muertos, the traditional Mexican holiday honoring the dead. The 5th annual gala, hosted by Carlos Eric Lopez, a Mexican-American photographer, entrepreneur, and influencer, aimed to shed light on Latino culture and heritage. The event attracted a star-studded guest list, including Camila Cabello, Nicole Richie, Miguel, Edgar Ramirez, Lele Pons, and many more.
Lopez's vision for the gala was to create a space that honored the past, present, and future of Latinos. He began by sharing a powerful story about the Home Depot near the venue, where a significant ICE raid occurred, impacting the Latino community. By leaving the lights of the past behind, Lopez wanted to create a new light for the future, emphasizing the importance of love and family. This theme was reflected throughout the event.
The gala featured traditional Dia de Muertos altars, known as ofrendas, adorned with images, offerings, and personal items of departed loved ones. A highlight of the evening was the presentation of the Abuelita Award by Cabello to her grandmother, Mercedes Rodriguez. Cabello shared a heartwarming story about her grandmother's bold spirit, which inspired her own courage to be bold. She praised her grandmother's diverse career path, including roles as a check translator, screenwriter, CEO, record label executive, and author.
Richie, a close friend of Lopez, expressed her appreciation for his events, stating that they offer a unique perspective on Los Angeles. Cimino, another guest, credited Lopez and the Dia de Muertos galas for bringing him together with lifelong friends and changing his life. During the gala, Lopez announced the launch of TúTomorrow, a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering the next generation of Latino creatives and entrepreneurs.
The musical performances added to the evening's ambiance. Lupita Infante and DannyLux each delivered brief sets, paying tribute to their family and the forgotten. Cabello, reflecting on her first-hand experience, concluded that the gala would be a memorable night for her family, one they would never forget.
